Yaejin Moon
Ph.D.Assistant Professor
Yaejin Moon (she/her/hers) is an assistant professor of Exercise Science. She teaches advanced biomechanics, motor control/development, and research methods.
Before joining Syracuse University, Moon was a post-doctoral research fellow from 2018-21 at Northwestern University, where she investigated the feasibility of applying a novel neuromodulation strategy (transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation) for gait recovery in persons with stroke and spinal cord injury.
Moon’s research focuses on improving mobility and reducing fall-related injuries in people with neurological disorders and older adults. She investigates neurophysiological and biomechanical mechanisms to understand how a person walks and maintains balance. To translate basic research results into clinical application, she examines the effectiveness of novel interventions to improve walking function in various clinical populations. She also validates innovative technologies that help measure movement in easy yet accurate ways.
She has published in various biomechanics, neuroscience, and rehabilitation journals, including Journal of Biomechanics, Clinical Biomechanics, Frontiers Human Neuroscience, Brain Science, Human Movement Science, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and PLOS One. Some of her works have also been introduced in the media (e.g., The Wall Street Journal). She is an ad-hoc reviewer for several journals, including Clinical Rehabilitation, Gait and Posture, Frontiers in Neuroscience, and Sensors.
Moon’s doctoral research was supported by the Carol L. Chittenden Fellowship in Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Moon received the T. K. Cureton Physical Fitness Research Award in 2016 and the Paul D. Doolen Graduate Scholar for the Biological-Biomedical Sciences in 2018.
